Just like River God, I have read it many times. It's a good book, just not as good as as its prequel. I really like how you can follow the good guys finding the tomb of Pharaoh and be sometimes amused how they struggle with Taita's riddles, because after reading River God, you know Taita personally ;-)What irks me in this book, is how the good guys get robbed of all acquired information and collected hints and items several times, so that the bad guys can keep on their heels. This is a bit lazy on Smiths part, because that's just an easy way of having the bad guys being able to chase them so closely. But to the latest after the second time (in the UK) that Royan got almost killed, it should have been clear what's going on. The next time, in the gorge, where their camp got raided, and all new material stolen from them again, is one time too many. It really irks me. Still give it 4 Stars.Reduced to 3 stars for the eBook, that doesn't give reading time for the chapters. Oh, it does, but the one chapter it recognises has the same reading time as the full book. Sloppy work.

How is it possible for a sequel to be set 4,000 years after the original story? Wilbur Smith answers that question in The Seventh Scroll, a book set largely in modern day Ethiopia where conflicting groups try to locate the Egyptian treasure entombed by Taita at the end of The River God, this book's predessor. I don't know how someone who had not read The River God would respond to The Seventh Scroll (though from the other reviews it is obvious that many loved it without reading the prior book) but for me, the connection between Taita, a character that dominated the story in The River God and remains one of my favorite recent fictional characters, and the exciting 'race for the treasure' plot of The Seventh Scroll, made the action of this book all the more fascinating.The plot and characters here - unlike The River God - don't represent any great invetive achievement. It is pretty standard good guy/bad guy stuff with lots of cliff hanger action. But Smith handles this kind of thing better than most other authors and can make even predictable situations and characters exciting.A fun read, especially if you read and enjoyed The River God. I would recommend this, and most of Smith's many novels, to anyone who likes exciting, complex and intelligent stories. His are all this and more.
River God was that rarest of breeds, the historical novel almost completely unconnected to history. Not even the characters' names were Egyptian. But I'll hand Wilbur Smith this: he knows how to punish an evildoer. Larger than life villains meet larger than life fates. However we may feel about capital punishment, it is hard not to cheer when justice comes for the evil.Now, fast forward a few thousand years, give or take, and we pick up the story again; sort of. This novel, too, is delightfully unhinged, utterly unbelievable, and just as hard to put down. We're ashamed, but we keep reading anyway, if only to see how the corrupt neo-Nazi billionaire collector of antiquities gets served his reward. On the way, we tour battered Ethiopia, grub through caves, dodge carnivorous eels invented for our entertainment, and find a little love. Yes, readers, Seventh Scroll is a video game without the sound effects, and substitutes the imagination for CGI magic.I loathe myself, but I loved it. Dive in, but watch out for eels and, for heaven's sake, don't drink the water.
An engaging adventure, "The Seventh Scroll", although deritive of other works in this genre, is surprising enough to keep you hooked. There's romance, action, and lots of people die...especially the bad guys (very satisfying that is too). The best part, to this reader's mind, was the description of ancient engineering, and the idea that there are still treasures out there waiting to be discovered. The two protagonists, Royan and Nicholas, are complicated and empathetic, and the surrounding characters, both good and bad, stay in your mind long after the novel is over. A sequel of sorts to "River God", this is a great page turner and will entertain almost any reader.
I was shopping at a garage sale when I say a battered copy of a book called the "Seventh Scroll". It looked a bit interesting so I decided to buy it. (It was only $0.50 anyway.) I took it home and began reading it. I was ingrossed. I read it in less than a week. (I had full time school and part time work at the time. I could only read at night.) I would go to bed at 8:00 and stay up and read till midnight to 3:00. This book isn't for the weak of stomach. Wilbur A. Smith has a way of making every death into a wonderfully grousome tale. He deffinatly used his imagination on this. I finished reading it and recommended it to my mother who also greatly enjoyed it. Through out the whole book there was mention to another book called "River God". But I wasn't sure if it was a real book or a made up book for the purpose of the story. It turns out that it was the first book. I had read and understood the whole book "Seventh Scroll" without even reading "River God". (I have bought a copy of "River God" and can't wait to start reading it.) Even if you don't want to read "River God" you can really get into this book. Read it!
